You're reading: SBU opens 57 cases on state treason, 54 on terrorism in 2019

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) opened 239 cases on crimes against national and public security in 2019 based on the materials of counterintelligence, the SBU’s Counterintelligence Department reported on the special service’s website.

Fifty-seven of them were opened under Article 111 (state treason), seven – under Article 114 (espionage), four – under Article 110 (trespass against territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine) and 54 – under Articles 113, 258, 258-3, 258-5, 260, 263 (terrorism and sabotage) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Ninety people were sentenced, including 24 for state treason and 35 for terrorism, to various terms and kinds of punishment due to activities of the SBU’s counterintelligence.

The SBU denounced six spies who worked undercover for diplomatic missions to Ukraine and they were declared personae non grata.

Fifty-one criminal cases were opened and 22 people were convicted for the violation of the rules of international transfer due to counterintelligence in the sphere of military and technical cooperation and export control.

According to the SBU, it also prevented smuggling of military and dual-use goods worth over Hr 50 million. In addition, the SBU discovered and blocked corrupt activities in the sphere of military and technical cooperation worth over $110 million and prevented appropriation of around Hr 750 million during the implementation of the state defense procurement order.

“In 2019, the SBU held 32 checks into activities of companies which broke the legislation in this sphere. Thus, more than Hr 7 million of penalties were paid to the budget,” the report says.

Day of Counterintelligence of the SBU was marked on Dec. 27.

SBU Chief Ivan Bakanov and Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) Oleksiy Danilov congratulated counterintelligence employees on their professional holiday and thanked for their work.
