The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) claims that its officers have unearthed a plot of two Russian nationals who were attempting to collect information for the aggressor state about the Kyiv subway’s underground communication systems.

The law enforcers concluded that in January 2018, two Russian nationals, who are members of the so-called digger movement, were recruited by someone from Russian secret services. “The agents were ordered by their handler to collect information about underground facilities located in large industrial cities and capital cities in European Union countries and Ukraine,” the SBU’s press center said.

The SBU claimed that “the service’s operatives exposed Russian nationals during their attempt to illegally enter the premises of a subway station in Kyiv.”

When searching the two detainees’ belongings, SBU officers found special climbing equipment, technical devices for photo and video shooting and some mechanical tools for breaching security systems, it said.

“Given the fact that the Russian diggers did not commit the crime and were actively cooperating with our law enforcers, the Ukrainian side […] has opted for their deportation to the Russian Federation. The five-year ban on the entry into Ukraine has been imposed on both young people,” the SBU said.
