The Ukrainian National Guard said it had taken measures to tighten security at foreign diplomatic missions, consular establishments and representations of international organizations.

This was done on the orders of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko following an incident involving the attack on the Polish general consulate in Lutsk.

“The National Guard in cooperation with National Police units increased the number of patrols on routes located near diplomatic facilities,” the Ukrainian National Guard said in a statement issued on Wednesday afternoon.

The press service also said reserves have been put on high alert in National Guard units assisting security units at diplomatic missions, consular establishments of foreign states and representations of international organizations in Ukraine.

“The main efforts of personnel involved in the protection of the facilities are aimed at preventing and curbing possible terrorist threats, illegal actions, and violations of public order near diplomatic missions,” the agency said.

Unknown individuals opened fire on the building of the Polish General Consulate in Lutsk in the early hours of March 29. The shots were fired from the streets from the backyard and hit a window on the upper floor. There was no one in the building at the time of the explosion and therefore no one was hurt. A terrorism case has been opened.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said he is outraged by the provocation against the Polish General Consulate in Lutsk.

Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland Andriy Deschytsia had been summoned to the Polish Foreign Ministry regarding the incident. The Polish diplomatic mission in Kyiv will hand over a note of protest to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
