You're reading: Sobolev says Rada has two ‘strong’ candidates for NABU auditor, both with foreign experience

Two persons with experience in the prosecution in the United States and Spain have confirmed their participation in a contest for the post of an independent auditor of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) from the Verkhovna Rada’s quota, chairman of the parliament’s anti-corruption committee Yehor Sobolev has said.

“As you know, our committee has announced a contest. We’ve already got confirmation from strong candidates: U.S. prosecutor Martha Boersch and Spanish prosecutor Carlos Castresana. We are very glad,” he said at a committee meeting with representatives of the USAID-Rada program in Kyiv on April 18.

“Yet, if you have others among the people you know and partners who can help [the Ukrainian] parliament to choose the right person as a strong auditor for the NABU, we’ll be grateful to you,” he said.

May 3 is the deadline for applying for the contest, he added.

As reported, the Rada failed on March 21 to delegate Nigel Brown to the NABU’s Audit Commission within its quota. Some 200 parliamentarians voted for him with the required minimum being 226 MPs.

Prior to this, parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy had put two candidacies to the vote: Brown and the other candidate, Robert Storch. During the rating vote, the first candidate received more votes, after which he was put to the vote for approval as an independent auditor of the NABU.
