You're reading: Some 70 Ukrainian border guards killed, five go missing since beginning of war in Donbas

Since the beginning of Russian aggression in April 2014, some 70 Ukrainian border guards have been killed in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and another five are considered missing.

The figures were announced on Dec. 17 during a visit by Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov and head of the State Border Service Petro Tsyhykal to the State Border Service’s Donetsk-Luhansk regional department, the Interior Ministry’s media liaison office said.

“About 20,000 border guards took part in operations to ensure national security and defense, repulse and curb the armed aggression of the Russian Federation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, 431 were wounded in action. Unfortunately, not all returned home alive. 70 border guards defending Ukraine from Russia’s armed forces fulfilled their military duty at the cost of their own lives, five persons are still considered missing,” the report said.
