You're reading: Some Ukrainian sailors in Russian captivity have serious leg, hand wounds

Some Ukrainian sailors held in a Moscow pretrial prison have suffered severe injuries to their legs and amputation of fingers, Naval Forces advisor Viktoria Khrystenko has said.

“Three sailors are being held in the Matrosskaya Tishina detention facility. Our consuls did not officially receive any video or confirmation of the nature of their injuries, except that Russia’s ombudswoman visited them. This does not tell us anything. We don’t know the extent of their injuries or what kind of surgery was performed. One of the sailor’s fingers were amputated,” Khrystenko said on Priamy TV channel on Thursday night.

Khrystenko urged Ukrainians to write letters to the captive seamen, noting that the letters should be in Russian, not have Ukrainian symbols and not touch on political topics. Otherwise prison censors will confiscate the missives.
