You're reading: Survey shows number of NATO supporters growing in Ukraine

The number of supporters of joining NATO, as a guarantee of state security, continues growing in Ukraine in comparison with previous periods, according to a poll conducted by the Kyiv-based Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation and the Kyiv-based Razumkov Center from June 9 to June 13 with the support of the Matra program and the Embassy of the Netherlands.

There are 47.2 percent supporters of NATO membership in Ukraine, 30.7 percent supporters of non-aligned status, 6.1 percent supporters of military alliance with Russia and former Soviet Republics, while 2.3 percent expressed other views, the press release “Public opinion of Ukraine’s population on NATO” says.

At the same time, there were 43.3 percent supporters of NATO membership in May 2016, and only 13 percent in April 2012, while there were 7.1 percent supporters of the military alliance with Russia and former Soviet Republics a year ago, and 26.2 percent in 2012. And the non-aligned status was supported by 25.1 percent in 2016, 42.1 percent in 2012.

During the survey, 2018 respondents were interviewed in all regions of Ukraine, except for the occupied territories of Crimea and Donbas. The theoretical sampling error is 2.3 percent.

Opinion polls of 2012-2016 were conducted by the Kyiv-based Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation in cooperation with the Kyiv-based Razumkov Center and the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.
