You're reading: Survey shows Ukrainians’ fading trust in government

A new survey conducted by the Razumkov Center think tank shows that the majority of Ukrainians do not trust the country’s government.

The Razumkov Center published the results of the survey on its website on Feb. 21.

As opposed to the population’s high trust in the Cabinet of Ministers in September, when 57% of Ukrainians expressed trust in the government in the wake of July parliamentary elections, today 64.5% don’t trust the executive body.

While 51% don’t support the cabinet’s actions at all, 34% support them partially and only 6% support all of their policies.

About 63% of the population expressed a lack of trust in Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk, while 25% responded that they trust the official.

According to the survey, the political preferences of Ukrainians influence their trust or lack thereof in the government. Voters backing the largest party in parliament, President Volodymyr Zelensky’s Servant of the People, appear to trust the cabinet more than supporters of other parties.

The survey also shows a shift in the population’s overall opinion about the country’s development. 53% of Ukrainians think the country is not “moving in the right direction,” with only 25% disagree. The numbers, again, significantly decreased compared to the September survey, when 44% believed the country was developing in the right way.

The population’s optimism regarding solutions to Ukraine’s current issues decreased as well. Only 21% believe that the country can overcome the struggles it faces now within a couple of years. About 49% think Ukraine will be able to do so in the longer term.

Apart from that, the survey estimated Ukrainians’ trust in law enforcement and the authorities. According to the results, the most trustworthy bodies are the Armed Forces of Ukraine (69%) the State Emergency Service (65%), the State Border Service (60%) and the National Guard (60%).

The least trustworthy authorities include elected officials (77%), the judiciary branch (76%), local courts (71%) and prosecutors (68%). They are followed by the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau, the National Anti-Corruption Agency, the Supreme Court, the Anticorruption Court and the Constitutional Court of Ukraine – all of whom the majority of Ukrainians appear not to trust.
