You're reading: Swedish parliament commemorates victims of Holodomor for first time

OnI Nov. 29, for the first time the Swedish parliament commemorated the victims of the man-made famine Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine, the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported.

“The event was attended by the speaker of the Swedish Riksdag Urban Ahlin, First Vice-speaker of the Swedish Riksdag Ewa Thalen Finne, Head of the Swedish-Ukrainian Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group Christer Hammarberg, members of the Swedish Riksdag, the ambassadors of the countries accredited in Sweden, representatives of Ukrainians NGOs in Sweden. The commemoration of the victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine in 1932-1933 was organized with the direct assistance of the Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group between the Riksdag of Sweden and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine,” the report reads.

During the event, Speaker of the Swedish Parliament Ahlin, Ukrainian Ambassador to Sweden Ihor Sahach, Head of the Swedish-Ukrainian Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group Hammarberg addressed the audience.

Guests of the event were shown photos from the archives of the Central State Film and Photo Archives of Ukraine, reports of eyewitnesses of tragic events, materials of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory.

“The memory of the millions of Ukrainians tortured with hunger was honored with a minute of silence,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported.
