Switzerland will support Ukraine on its way of reform implementation and peaceful restoration of territorial integrity, Swiss President Simonetta Sommaruga said in a letter to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following their joint trip to Donbas.

“Please consider Switzerland as a trusted partner in these endeavors,” she said in the letter, according to the Ukrainian president’s press service.

Sommaruga said that the trip to Ukraine left her with a lasting impression.

“Seeing mothers and children pushing carts fully loaded with goods and luggage across this bridge (in Stanytsia Luhanska) between two minefields has strengthened my conviction that the conflict must end for the sake of the civilian population on both sides. I was impressed by your courage, your vision, and your resolve to tackle the challenges your country is facing today,” she said.

The Swiss president also noted the activities of the Ukrainian government, in particular, actions to regain full control of Ukraine’s territory.

“After discussing with members of your government and exchanging with young representatives of Ukrainian civil society and the private sector, I am confident that your country has a bright, democratic, and prosperous future in Europe,” she said.

On July 23, Sommaruga and Zelensky visited Stanytsia Luhanska, familiarized themselves with the work of the checkpoint on the demarcation line and examined the pedestrian bridge across the Siversky Donets River.
