You're reading: Sytnyk: PGO trying to retain investigators’ functions

Director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) Artem Sytnyk has said that trends that show that Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) does not want to be deprived of the function of investors are seen.

“If there is a political will, this agency (State Bureau of Investigations) could be created… Prosecutor General’s Office…is trying to leave investigation as a tool being the most powerful in Prosecutor General’s Office,” Sytnek said on Saturday.

He said that Prosecutor General’s Office divisions have lost the function of general control. The representative function of PGO has been restricted now, and this is the positive result of the reform.

“If the PGO loses investigation, this will be the office to support public prosecution that would not have a powerful resource,” he said.

He recalled that at present, the second phase of testing candidates to the State Bureau of Investigations is being held. The creation of this agency is not covered well in media.

He backs the creation of the State Bureau of Investigations so that NABU had a reliable partner.
