BRUSSELS — U.S. President Donald Trump called on NATO leaders at the Brussels Summit to meet in an unscheduled session on July 12, the second and final day of the event, sources close to the organizers of the summit say.
Trump’s reason for calling the special session has not been officially announced. According to one source close to the summit organizers, who did not want to be named, the leaders would discuss NATO defense spending commitments.
Earlier, Trump called on NATO to raise spending commitments from 2 percent of GDP to 4 percent.
The heads of state representing the 29 NATO allies are now meeting at the special session. Earlier, the NATO leaders met to discuss the situations in Ukraine and Georgia.
It is not known whether other bilateral meetings, including one between Trump and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, have been rescheduled or cancelled due to the holding of the special session.
