You're reading: Turchynov doesn’t think Russian social networks ban violates freedom of speech

The ban on Russian social networks in Ukraine is not an infringement on the freedom of speech, the Ukrainian National Defense and Security Council (NDSC) Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov has said.

“I understand that in this case there will be people yelling about an infringement on the freedom of speech. But there is no infringement on the freedom of speech at all. We are simply defending our country, not only on the battlefield, but also from information and cyber aggression,” he told reporters in Kyiv on May 16.

There were serious issues with ensuring information security, the authorities are trying to address them now, Turchynov said. “There is indeed a problem, for instance, some headmasters are calling us and asking what they should do because they use educational programs via VKontakte,” he said.
