You're reading: Tusk says EU supports European integration aspirations of Ukraine

The European Union supports the European aspirations of Ukraine, which are stipulated in the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU, European Council President Donald Tusk said.

“The most important part of the most important document – I mean the Association Agreement – is not a slogan. After the visa liberalization decision, after the Association Agreement and the FTA, this is our new reality. And I just want to repeal this quote ‘The European Union acknowledges the European aspirations of Ukraine and welcomes its European choice’,” Tusk said at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, when asked about possible disagreements among the EU member states concerning the introduction of the phrase “European integration aspirations of Ukraine” into the summit’s resolution.

Tusk said that the presence of the European Commission president and himself in Kyiv is not a mere coincidence.

For his part, Poroshenko said: “I’d like to confirm that this [Association Agreement] is really the main document that characterizes cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union. All the wordings, all the formulas that make Ukraine happy and make the EU happy are reflected in this paper, which has finally been ratified and in a couple of weeks will take effect. And Ukraine will not have any compromises as regards our European plans that have been established by the Association Agreement.”
