You're reading: Two policemen sustain minor injuries during LGBTI pride march in Kyiv

The Equality March, which had taken place as part of the KyivPride 2017 in the city’s downtown area, was held without any problems with law enforcement, its participants were unharmed, however two policemen sustained minor injuries while detaining six protesters against the event, Ukrainian law enforcement structures said.

“All events held today have already concluded. Participants are currently dispersing, public order in all [transport] locations in various areas was fully ensures. The National Police, the National Guard, all units of the Interior Ministry met the set objectives,” Ukrainian First Deputy Interior Minister Serhiy Yarovoi said at a briefing in Kyiv on June 18.

However, there were minor scuffles between policemen and protesters against the Equality March, Andriy Kryschenko, deputy head of the Ukrainian National Police said.

“Two policemen sought medical assistance, but for small scratches, no hospitalization was needed,” he said.

Six people were detained, they are currently in the Schevchenko district police station in Kyiv, Krischenko said. In addition, policemen seized several ski masks, fireworks, and medical face masks.

“No one was injured among organizers and participants in the Kyiv pride parade. They have already left. The places of their exits were reinforced with [police] units,” Krischenko said. The police will ensure heavy security in Kyiv until June 18 evening, he said.

As reported, according to the police, over 2,000 people participated in the event.
