You're reading: Ukraine, Bulgaria sign declaration on Bulgarian national minorities’ rights

The Ministries of Education and Science of Ukraine and Bulgaria have signed a declaration on the implementation of the language provisions of the Ukrainian law on education and the guarantee of the Bulgarian national minorities’ rights, the Ukrainian ministry’s press service reported on April 26.

“We very much appreciate Bulgaria’s constructive position on the Education Law and we are happy that we have finally succeeded in signing the declaration on ensuring the rights of persons belonging to Bulgarian national minorities to study and learn in their mother tongue,” Ukrainian Education Minister of Ukraine Liliia Hrynevych has said.

According to the press service, the declaration states that along with the study of the national language, the Bulgarian ethnic minority will be provided necessary conditions for studying and teaching in their native language.

The sides separately confirmed the importance of studying the national language “as a factor of integration of the country and public consent due to the expansion of the use of the state language in the educational process, in particular by increasing the time of instruction in the national language.” The declaration also suggests the signing of a new protocol on cooperation and exchange.

In turn, Bulgaria’s Minister of Education and Science of Krasimir Valchev confirmed that the development of partnership with Ukraine is very important to Bulgaria, so active cooperation continues, and the Bulgarian side will soon send its proposals to the draft protocol on cooperation.
