Ukraine will inform Germany about its stance on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and will continue taking steps to ensure that the Third Energy Package is applied to the pipeline’s operation, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said at an online press briefing on Oct. 27.

“As regards the German regulator’s decision, we’re upset. There’s already the position of Naftogaz on this issue, i.e. the position of the company that is involved in this process. We’ll inform German partners about our position and will ask them to work with them in order to ensure that decisions on Nord Stream 2 aren’t adopted hastily, quickly, without a thorough analysis and review,” Kuleba said.

He noted that regardless of how prompt the German regulator’s steps are, the European Commission’s involvement in this process is key here.

“The ultimate goal is the application of the Third Energy Package to the functioning of Nord Stream 2,” the Ukrainian minister said.

The German Economy Ministry concluded earlier that granting the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline a certification poses no threat to the security of gas supplies to Germany and the EU. The ministry forwarded its conclusions to the regulator, the Federal Network Agency, which is reviewing the paperwork for the certification of Nord Stream 2 AG as an independent gas transport operator.
