You're reading: Ukraine fines Russian airlines for breach of Ukrainian airspace

The State Aviation Service of Ukraine over the period when the sanctions against airlines breached Ukrainian airspace (flights to the annexed Crimea) imposed over 20,000 fines worth of Hr 2.72 billion on them, the authority has told Interfax-Ukraine.

The State Aviation Service recalled that the Ukrainian president on Sept. 16, 2015 enacted the decision of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) on applying personal sanctions to companies, in particular, Russian airlines.

The authority said that over 40 Russian airlines breached the Ukrainian airspace, including Aeroflot, VIM Avia, Gazprom Avia, Red Wings, Rossiya, Alrosa, Ural Airlines, Yamal, UTair, Transaero, 224 Letny Otryad (The 224th Flight Unit), Kogalymavia, Sokol, Bars Aero and other airlines.

The sanctions in the form of a fine for each breach of the Ukrainian airspace in the amount of 8,000 of non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens (Hr 136,000) were applied to the airlines.

Breaches of the law are recorded using data of the automated Aircon 2100 air navigation system.

“As for the number of breaches for each airline, the State Aviation Service does not record it, and it is impossible to provide this information,” the authority said.

As of Sept. 15, no fine out of Hr 2.7 billion has been paid.

The State Aviation Service jointly with the Infrastructure Ministry and Foreign Ministry is taking measures to apply to international courts to settle the situation on the payment of this debt and prevent violation of the Ukrainian airspace.
