Ukraine gets ready for a regular Ukraine-EU summit on October 1, said Deputy Head of Ukrainian President’s Office Ihor Zhovkva.

“It (Ukraine-EU summit) will definitely take place. And President of the European Union Charles Michel and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in their contacts with President Zelensky confirmed that on October 1 Ukraine-EU summit to which we are preparing to will take place,” he said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

Zhovkva said that at the summit Ukraine expected to sign an agreement on a joint aviation space. “Everyone knew about the problem between the UK and Spain because of the status of Gibraltar airport. With the UK exit the EU, this problem has been outweighed. Recent technical negotiations are ongoing. Spain should give its wording on the status of the airport. And we have a specific goal so that during the Ukraine-EU summit in October, this agreement was finally signed,” he said.

The deputy head of the President’s Office also noted that with the agreement on “industrial visa-free travel” Ukraine has fulfilled its obligations to adopt the relevant legislation, and it will soon begin to work.

“Now the ball is on the EU side. The assessment mission was supposed to come to Ukraine in March, but the coronavirus changed plans a little. During all our conversations we insist that this issue should remain on the agenda. And therefore, by the end of the year we are expecting the assessment mission. Of course, the access of Ukrainian industrial products, the provision of appropriate certification for it will allow us to enter not only the EU markets, but also the markets of other countries,” he stressed.

Zhovkva also pointed out the importance of the European Green Deal, which sets an ambitious goal for EU member states to turn Europe into an ecological continent by 2050. “Ukraine should not lag behind, at least considering what achievements it has in green energy. And we need EU help in this,” he said.
