You're reading: Ukraine is main topic of negotiations between Pompeo, Lavrov

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that the topic of Ukraine became the main one during his talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday.

“We also spent a fair amount of time talking about Ukraine. It was a major part of our conversations. Foreign Minister Lavrov just returned from Paris, where President Putin and President Zelensky had substantive conversations. I’m proud of what this administration has done in the defense of that country’s sovereignty and security,” Pompeo said during a press briefing with Russian Foreign Minister in Washington on Dec. 10.

The head of the U.S. Department of State once again emphasized that Crimea belongs to Ukraine and that the resolution of the conflict in Donbas will begin with compliance with the Minsk agreements.

“I reiterated to Foreign Minister Lavrov that Crimea belongs to Ukraine and that the resolution of the conflict in eastern Ukraine begins with adherence to commitments made under the Minsk agreements,” Pompeo added.
