Ukrainian and Moldovan side during the visit of Moldovan Prime Minister Pavel Filip to Kyiv agreed to establish a working committee that will deal with the settlement of the ecological state of the Dniester river and its impact on hydropower basin ecosystem.

“The top three priority issues of the signed roadmap of Ukrainian-Moldovan cooperation for 2017 are the Dniester protection issues […]. We have agreed to establish a working committee with representatives from the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of the two countries. The Commission will deal with the settlement of the passage of water, the ecological state of the Dniester’s water […] the impact of hydropower on the ecosystem of the river basin,” Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ostap Semerak wrote on his page on Facebook.

According to him, this issue is particularly relevant for Ukraine and demands a settlement and a common strategic vision.

“Ukraine, in its turn, is concerned about the pollution of the Dniester river because of the extremely poor state of sewage treatment plants in the town of Soroca and negative situation with industrial pollution of the river Kyrgizh-China on the territory of Moldova. We have initiated a joint decision on the appeal to the European Commission to involve partners from the European Union to find ways to attract technology and financing work to eliminate contamination of the Dniester. Our colleagues from Moldova have supported this initiative,” the minister said.
