CHISINAU – Moldova and Ukraine are preparing to create new joint checkpoints on the border, including on its Transdniestrian section, the press service of the Moldovan government has reported.

According to the press service, this issue was discussed at a meeting between Moldovan and Ukrainian Prime Ministers Pavel Filip and Volodymyr Groysman. The meeting was held in Tbilisi on Nov. 28, on the sidelines of the Tbilisi Belt and Road Forum 2017.

“Moldova has implemented all internal procedures for introducing the provisions of the joint border control agreement signed in Chisinau in early October. I think we can begin to agree on issues related to the opening of other joint border checkpoints,” Filip said.

During the meeting, the two countries’ premiers welcomed the resumption of the activities of the joint commission on the demarcation of the state border. The parties also agreed to speed up the coordination of the text of the agreement on the functioning of the Dniester Hydro Power Complex.

Filip and Groysman also agreed to sign the agreements on the liberalization of road and air transport by the end of this year. The parties also agreed to raise quotas for international cargo carriers from 43,000 to 60,000 licenses, and to extend the stay of Moldovan truck drivers in Ukraine.

As reported, the first joint Moldovan-Ukrainian border and customs control point was opened on the Transdniestrian section of the border in July.

The opening ceremony was attended by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Moldovan Prime Minister Pavel Filip.
