You're reading: Ukraine officially confirms case of polio in child

In Ukraine, a case of paralysis was recorded and confirmed in a 1.5-year-old child from Rivne region, which is caused by a derivative of the vaccine strain of poliovirus type 2 (Sabin 2), according to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

According to the press service of the department on Oct. 6, the child’s parents deliberately refused the vaccinations provided for by medical standards for religious reasons.

According to the Ministry of Health, on Sept. 3, the child was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of paresis of the lower limbs. The case was registered as a suspicion of field-acute flaccid paralysis and the necessary examination and observation was provided to clarify the circumstances.

A team of epidemiologists and virologists of the National Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Health, the regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry is already working in the region, who are looking for contact persons, collecting and analyzing their biomaterials, and studying the circumstances of the case in detail.
