The delegation of Ukraine led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Vasyl Bodnar will take part in the Special Session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (The Hague, Netherlands) on June 26-28, the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has reported.

The purpose of the event is to consider the use of chemical weapons in Syria, Iraq, Malaysia and the United Kingdom and the invention of mechanisms to prevent such use in the future.

“The participation of the delegation in the event is in line with Ukraine’s position on preventing the use of chemical weapons and in bringing the perpetrators to its responsibility, as well as on the activities of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) as a whole,” a message reads.

It is expected that the discussions at the session will continue around the draft resolution of the conference, recently promulgated by Great Britain. The document provides for condemnation of the use of chemical weapons both by states and non-state actors, as well as expressing support for the professional, impartial and independent activities of the Director-General and the Technical Secretariat of the OPCW.

Ukraine consistently defends the position on the importance of complete and irreversible chemical disarmament under effective international control and regards the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons as an effective instrument in this field.
