The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry expressed protest on Dec. 9 against the fact that Russia has denied a Ukraine consul a meeting with Ukrainian citizen Stanislav Klykh earlier convicted by a Russian court.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry demanded that Russia immediately permit a Ukrainian consul to visit Klykh and other Ukrainian citizens detained in Russia, as is stipulated by Article 13 of the 1995 Consular Convention between Ukraine and Russia.

It was reported that on May 26, 2016 the Chechen Supreme Court sentenced Mykola Karpiuk and Stanislav Klykh to 22.5 and 20 years of imprisonment, respectively.

On October 26, the Russian Supreme Court upheld the verdicts for the Ukrainian citizens, who were convicted in the case on fighting against federal troops during the first Chechnya campaign as part of the Ukrainian National Assembly-Ukrainian National Self-Defense (UNA-UNSO).
