You're reading: Ukrainian courts consider only one third of incoming corruption cases

During the first half of 2017, only one third of criminal cases on corruption crimes were considered at Ukrainian courts and 469 officials were convicted, of which 121 were sentenced to imprisonment.

“For the first half of the year, 2,237 criminal proceedings indictments on corruption crimes were received by the courts, of which only 741 were considered,” Chairman of the Supreme Court of Ukraine Yaroslav Romaniuk told a briefing in Kyiv on August 7.

According to statistical data provided to journalists, 469 officials were convicted on the basis of these proceedings, of which 77 were discharged, 110 cases were closed. Out of 469 convicts, 121 were imprisoned, 33 of them were restrained, while 265 officials were fined.

The largest number of people among the convicts are identified under the category ‘other civil servants’ – 101 people: 58 police officers and other Interior Ministry employees, 44 military officials, 32 local government officials, 29 law enforcement officers, 19 village, town and city heads, 18 members of local councils, 13 employees of the State Fiscal Service.

At the same time, only two employees of the Prosecutor’s Office, one employee of the Security Service, one employee of the court administration are among the convicts. And there is neither a single judge nor an employee of the National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP) or the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU).
