Ukrainian karateka Stanislav Horuna won bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics on Aug. 6.

Ukraine now has 14 medals – one gold, three silver and 10 bronze – and is ranked 40th in the official medal count.

Horuna received a bronze medal after losing to Italian Luigi Busa in the semifinals of the men’s under 75-kilogram category kumite karate tournament. Busa defeated Horuna 3:0 and later beat Rafael Aghayev, from Azerbaijan, to win Olympic gold.

European karate champion Horuna was dissatisfied with coming short of the final.

“I’m dissatisfied with the result and my performance,” said Horuna after the loss. “I feel the difference between what I expected to achieve and what I have.”

Horuna’s medal became the second Ukrainian medal in the Olympic karate. On Aug. 5, Ukrainian karateka Anzhelika Terliuga won silver in the women’s 55-kilogram category.

This is the first time karate appears at the Summer Olympics. Four other new sports were added to the Tokyo Olympic program –  baseball/softball, skateboarding, sports climbing and surfing.

The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics will run through Aug. 8. Ukrainian Suspilne Sport online media and UA:Pershyi television channel broadcast the event for free.
