You're reading: Ukrainian Shumkov detained by Russia goes on hunger strike

Ukrainian Oleksandr Shumkov, who has been illegally convicted in Russian Federation, has gone on a hunger strike following a systemic violation of his rights by the staff of a penal colony in Tver region and psychological pressure put on him, Verkhovna Rada Commissioner on Human Rights Liudmyla Denysova has said.

“I am addressing to Commissioner for Human Rights of Russian Federation Tatyana Moskalkova: to immediately take appropriate measures to renew the violated rights of a citizen of Ukraine Oleksandr Shumkov, namely to give an answer to his numerous appeals and to stop the psychological pressure put by the penal colony’s staff,” Denysova wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.

As reported, in early December 2018, a court in the Bryansk region found serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, citizen of Ukraine Shumkov being guilty of participating in an extremist organization. The investigation called him the former bodyguard of the leader of the Right Sector organization Dmitry Yarosh. The court sentenced Shumkov to four years in a penal colony.
