You're reading: Ukrainians become largest foreign community in Lithuania

Ukrainians are ahead of the Russians and became the largest foreign community in Lithuania, according to the Lithuanian Migration Department.

According to it, in early 2019, almost 17,000 Ukrainians lived in Lithuania. This is almost 42 percent more than a year ago.

The community of Russian citizens who arrived in Lithuania is almost 12,500 people. This is almost 3 percent less than in 2018.

Almost the same number of Belarusian citizens lives in Lithuania. Their number increased by a third over the year.

As a result, citizens of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus comprise 84 percent of all foreigners living in Lithuania. The largest groups of citizens of EU member states are citizens of Latvia, Germany and Poland.

Over the year, the number of foreign citizens living in Lithuania grew by almost 17.5 percent. Foreigners living in the country accounted for just over 2 percent of the population of Lithuania.
