As of Jan. 10, Ukrainians have cleared through the customs 24,600 cars with foreign registration under new provisions, the Finance Ministry said on Jan. 11.

Some 21,000 of the customs-cleared cars had already been inside Ukraine in the violation of the customs regulations, the ministry said.

The ministry said a total of Hr 1.566 billion has been collected from customs clearance and additional obligatory fees for such cars, including Hr 158.2 million in custom fees, Hr 495.5 million in VAT, Hr 738 million in excise duties, and an additional sum of Hr 174.1 million has been received in official payments to avoid full fines for violation of customs regulations.

In the past two weeks, on average, about 1,500 cars with foreign registration are cleared in Ukraine, the ministry said.

As earlier reported, the Verkhovna Rada passed laws on decreasing excise tax on cars and on strengthening control over the movement and use of cars registered in other nations. At the same time, the owners of cars with foreign registration have been given an opportunity to go through customs clearance with a 50 percent discount on excise duty for 90 calendar days.
