You're reading: Ukrzaliznytsia devising strategy for multimodal transportation development

JSC Ukrzaliznytsia is devising a long-term strategy for the development of multimodal transportation, the press service of Ukrzaliznytsia said with reference to acting member of the board of Ukrzaliznytsia Roman Veprytsky on May 27.

In particular, he said that the container transportation market in Ukraine shows positive growth dynamics by an average of 13-15% annually. Accordingly, the growth of container transportation also occurs on the railway. Thus, in the first four months of 2020, some 90,000 TEU were transported by rail in container trains, which is more than double the volume of traffic for the same period in 2019.

“The development of rail container transportation in Ukraine should be one of the main directions of Ukrzaliznytsia, but it should not be chaotic either. Therefore, today we are devising a strategy for the development of multimodal transportation,” Veprytsky said during a meeting with representatives of cargo owners of Ukraine and the management of the Liski transport service center.

The expert also said that the strategy should solve a number of issues for the further dynamic development of container transportation.

“The multimodal transportation market has a great potential. However, for its further development, we must resolve issues related to rolling stock renewal, the construction of the intermodal terminal chain and the technical equipment of existing terminals. These are the key directions that we are working on in our development strategy,” Veprytsky said.

He also said that rail container transportation could reach 2.8 million TEU by 2030.

“Some 2.8 million TEU of cargo is an optimistic scenario laid down in the development strategy of Ukrzaliznytsia for 2019-2023. I believe that these are quite achievable numbers,” Veprytsky said.
