The United Nation welcomes the efforts of the Ukrainian government to establish an unprecedented ceasefire during the pandemic, UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine Osnat Lubrani has said.
She said at the UN flag raising ceremony to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the UN in Kyiv on Friday, that when the pandemic broke, the UN Secretary-General called for a global ceasefire, and the UN members welcome the government’s efforts to establish an unprecedented ceasefire that saves the lives of citizens living in close proximity to the confrontation line. This must continue.
Lubrani said although 2020 has the lowest annual civilian casualties, the number is still high.
She also said that even one lost life is too much, and the unresolved armed conflict still takes a heavy toll on the civilian population. The UN insists on increased cooperation with the sole purpose of eliminating suffering among the civilian population by meeting their humanitarian needs.
The UN coordinator in Ukraine named three priorities for cooperation between the UN and Ukraine until 2030.
According to Lubrani, the first priority includes the UN efforts to contribute to ensuring a stable peaceful environment in Ukraine, the second one is the importance to ensure the continuation of structural reforms and the importance of strategic communications in order to effectively demonstrate the positive impact of reforms on the lives of Ukrainian citizens.
Finally, the third goal, according to Lubrani, is the joint promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms, in particular the achievement of gender equality.
