You're reading: Unfinished shopping pavilion collapses in Kharkiv, three people injured

KHARKIV – An unfinished shopping pavilion collapsed in Kharkiv near the Oleksandr Maselsky metro station in the evening of Jan. 11, injuring three people, the police in Kharkiv have said.

Following the collapse of the roof of the unfinished shopping pavilion, three women aged 26, 27, and 62 were injured; there is no threat to their lives, the press service of the Kharkiv regional state administration said.

“They have all sustained light injuries. They were provided with medical assistance on site and then taken to the hospital for further treatment,” the press service quoted Viktor Zabashta, director of the local Center of Emergency Medical Assistance and Emergency Medicine, as saying.

The collapse was caused by a heavy load of snow and there were no people inside the pavilion at the moment of the collapse, Oleksiy Maksymov, director of the department for defense and mobilization activities and law enforcement liaison of the Kharkiv regional state administration, said.

“Under the weight of snow, engineering structures collapsed. There were no people inside. However, as a result of the collapse, three people who were passing by were injured,” Maksymov said.

The press service of the Kharkiv regional state administration said that about 50 personnel of the State Emergency Service and some 50 policemen were called to the scene.

The police started criminal investigations into the case under Part 2 of Article 272 (violation of safety rules during the execution of works with increased danger) and Part 2 of Article 367 (negligence of duties) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
