An American woman who worked for the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine was found unconscious near the railroad on Tolbukhin Street in Kyiv, police reported on Sept. 30.

According to the authorities, the woman sustained a severe head injury and died in a hospital shortly after. She had an identification card of a U.S. Embassy employee. The police did not disclose the woman’s name.

The embassy said they weren’t ready to disclose the woman’s identity and position.

“We are heartbroken to report the death of an American member of the U.S. Embassy Kyiv community. Officials from U.S. Embassy are currently working with authorities to determine the circumstances of the death,” Walter Braunohler, U.S. embassy’s counselor for public affairs, told the Kyiv Post.

To determine the cause of her death, the body was sent to a forensic medical examination center, the police spokesperson Anna Zubreva told the Kyiv Post.

Later on Sept. 30, the spokesperson of Ukraine’s Interior Ministry Artem Shevchenko said on air of the Espreso TV channel that the woman could have been a victim of a tragic accident. Since she was found near the rail tracks and was wearing headphones, the police are looking into a version that she was hit by a train while jogging.

Earlier, the police said that an unknown man, whose age is anywhere between 30-40, “might be involved in the case.” The police described him as wearing black shorts, dark-blue sneakers, and a T-shirt. The search for him is currently under way.
