The United States and the European Union will continue cooperating with Ukraine regardless of the outcome of the presidential election, the second round of which is scheduled for April 21, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch and Head of the European Union Delegation to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli have said.
The U.S. government will continue to cooperate with any candidate chosen by Ukrainians as president. We will continue to work on those things that are important both for the Ukrainian people and the United States, namely: successful resolution of the conflict in the east of the country, a thriving economy and respect for the government of all citizens in accordance with the law, Yovanovitch said, speaking before ENEMO short-term observers in the second round of the presidential election in Ukraine on April 19.
She noted that the first round of elections had been held on a competitive basis, free from cruelty and illegitimate processes. We hope that this positive trend will continue on April 21, the ambassador added.
In turn, Mingarelli supported his colleague: In the European Union, we will continue to support the Ukrainian people, regardless of the outcome of the elections, in order to promote democracy, the modernization of Ukraine and European integration.
He also noted the importance of the fact that all the candidates agreed with the results of the first round of presidential elections.
