The Venice Commission of the Council of Europe (The European Commission for Democracy through Law) has received a request to evaluate Ukraine’s language law.

The President of the Venice Commission on May 22 received a letter asking the Venice Commission to provide an opinion on the law on ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the national language, the press service of the Council of Europe said on Thursday.

As reported, on April 25, the Verkhovna Rada adopted in second reading and as a whole the bill on the Ukrainian language. The parliamentarians considered amendments to the document in plenary sessions for almost two months, since February 28, 2019.

On May 15, the then President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed the language law, noting its exceptional balance.
