The United States supports Ukraine’s future membership of NATO; however, Kyiv and the Alliance are not ready for this yet, U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker has said.

“We support Ukraine’s future membership of the Alliance and keep our doors open. And we did so at a recent meeting of foreign ministers of NATO-member states, Ukraine and Georgia,” he said in an interview with the Kyiv-based newspaper Den.

“Ukraine is not ready for membership yet. And NATO too is not ready to reach a consensus on allowing Ukraine to join it,” Volker said.

He also said the United States would like to see progress towards Ukraine’s membership of the Alliance and encourage bilateral agreements.
