You're reading: Yanukovych: Opposition leaders during Maidan protests offered to form technical government

During discussions on defusing the crisis during the EuroMaidan Revolution (late 2013/early 2014), opposition leaders criticized officials and spoke of forming a technical government, ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych said during skype-questioning from Rostov, Russia.

“During talks we discussed how to diffuse the crisis and government officials were criticized. Opposition leaders made proposals to form a technical government. They were unpleasant for me and based on criticism of acting government officials at the time,” Yanukovuch said during skype-questioning at Kyiv’s Sviatoshynsky district court from Rostov, Russia on Nov. 28.

Yanukovych said Arseniy Yatseniuk was offered the prime minister position and promised “to think about it.”

The ex-president said he was not against forming a technical government with members of the opposition, but that he was forced into taking the decision.

“I said, ‘Give me proposals. One of them was to appoint Yatseniuk PM,” Yanukovych said.

The ex-president said Yatseniuk told him he would have to think about the proposal. According to Yanukovych, he said, ‘I don’t know what to think of it. From a political standpoint, it doesn’t suit me.'”

Yanukovych said there were also proposals to engage the opposition leader Vitaliy Klitschko “in the sphere of sports,” but could not remember exactly in what capacity.
