You're reading: Yanukovych’s lawyers call on prosecutors to bring Lutsenko to justice

Lawyers from the Aver Lex firm Vitaliy Serdyuk and Ihor Fedorenko, who represent the interests of disgraced former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, have initiated a procedure to bring chief of Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) Yuriy Lutsenko to justice, as well as Ruslan Kravchenko from Ukraine’s main military prosecutor’s office.

The lawyers called on the PGO and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) to bring Lutsenko and Kravchenko to justice for violating their client’s right to justice, pursuant to Articles 27, 366, 374 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, the press service of the law firm said on Dec. 16.

The lawyers say Lutsenko and Kravchenko presented to Kyiv’s Pechersky district court deliberately false evidence leading to the latter’s decision to order Yanukovych’s arrest.

“Yuriy Lutsenko and Ruslan Kravchenko colluded illegally and hid important information from the court. Knowing that Yanukovych’s lawyers would reject their claims, they decided to ignore legal requirements and failed to notify us that this issue would be reviewed,” Serdyuk said.

He claims such action has harmed both the personal rights and freedoms of Yanukovych and the interests of the state in general.

Serdyuk said, “The PGO is establishing the illegal practice of bringing Ukrainian citizens to criminal justice via trial in absentia and falsifying documents while ignoring legal procedures elaborated in Ukraine’s Criminal Procedural Code.”

As earlier reported, Kyiv’s Pechersky district court during a closed session on Dec. 14, supported the prosecutor’s motion to grant permission to arrest Yanukovych.

Yanukovych’s lawyer Serdyuk said the decision of the court would be appealed, all the way to the EU Court of Human Rights, if necessary.
