Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko has called for the creation of a new center-right party in the country.
“Frankly speaking, I have called for the creation of a center-right party, which should provide a European reform plan,” he said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.
“I think that it is high time for the People’s Front, the BPP, and a number of other parties to understand that self-sufficient people, the middle and creative class, have been long looking not for leaders, but for a stable political party defending their interests,” Lutsenko said.
At the same time, in his opinion, “old parties no longer have any chances.”
“We need self-purification, unification and renewal. This concerns the name, leadership, and goals,” he said.
Lutsenko also called for strengthening the powers of the parliament.
“Everyone knows that Arseniy Yatsenyuk has long been seeking that. I also think so, only less publicly,” he said.
According to him, the president should support changes to the Constitution of Ukraine, “which he already introduced, but the ill-fated amendment on the special status of Donbas killed this proposal.”
“Regional and district administrations should go into oblivion, prefects must bind the country from potential separatism, and all executive bodies must be managed by the Cabinet under special procedures,” Lutsenko said, noting that “the only discrepancy with the People’s Front leaders is that in the current situation in Ukraine, at least until the restoration of territorial integrity, both the defense minister and the foreign minister should be controlled by the president.”
“As far as I know, the president basically agrees with this position. It’s only a matter of time,” he said.
Lutsenko declined to talk about his possible participation in this project at the parliamentary elections in 2019, suggesting to look first at the results of the presidential elections.
“They will determine the threats and challenges of the next political season and of the Verkhovna Rada,” he said.
