You're reading: Zaporizhia regional governor warns about attempts to destabilize his region

Head of Zaporizhia Regional State Administration Kostiantyn Bryl informed Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko, Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko and Ukrainian Security Service Chief Vasyl Hrytsak about the threat of destabilization of the situation in the region and an attempt to seize the state power.

During an extraordinary session of Zaporizhia Regional Council, Bryl made an official statement concerning a crime against national security and the constitutional power and asked to register an appeal, which will be sent to the president, the prosecutor general and the SBU chief, the Department of Information and Public Relations of Zaporizhia Regional State Administration reported on July 27.

“An analysis of the trends and specifics of the development of the situation in the region exposes the preparations for large-scale actions in Zaporizhia and Zaporizhia region aimed at supporting forceful changes or overthrowing the constitutional system, seizure of the state power, changing the borders of the territory or state border of Ukraine, as well as the financing of the above-mentioned actions,” Bryl said.

According to him, leaders of a number of pro-Russian organizations carry out systematic activities aimed at destabilizing the social and political situation in the region.

“The so-called ‘fake’ protest actions against the infringement of rights of ethnic groups in Zaporizhia region, attempts to paint the alleged achievements of the Russian Federation in improving the life of pro-Russian formations  is a brainwashing campaign aimed at forming an opinion favorable to the Russian side among residents of the city and the region,” the governor said.

In his words, these and other materials are used by Russian propaganda media to create a negative international image of Ukraine, stirring up separatist sentiments aimed at violating Ukraine’s territorial integrity and inviolability of its borders.

Later this day on the air of the 112.ua television channel Bryl said that he didn’t have any specific officials in mind, but was talking more about “the leaders of the political elites of the Opposition Bloc and Samopomich parties.”

According to him, in the past six months representatives of this deputy corps “have continued to put a spoke in the wheel of the current authorities.” “And not in political matters, but in social matters, on which the discontent of citizens is based and which cause social tension,” Bryl said.

He said representatives of these parties in the regional council are blocking the issues of social development and protection of socially vulnerable segments of the population, which creates grounds for social discontent.

Bryl noted that according to the SBU information, these actions have one center and one source of funding and coordination.

“Zaporizhia region is a border region, and as a representative of the Ukrainian president I will not allow such actions to destabilize the situation in the region,” he said.

“I have already informed the president, the prosecutor general of Ukraine, and the head of the Security Service of Ukraine and I think criminal proceedings will be based on my words and facts,” the governor said on the air of the TV channel.
