You're reading: Zelenskiy bewildered by Poroshenko’s recent appointments

President-elect Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said he is bewildered by several appointments to official positions by incumbent President Petro Poroshenko lately, including judge appointments to Ukraine’s Supreme Court.

“… The former president Poroshenko doing what will be irreversible: he makes active changes in the high command of the army, tries to push through his chairman of the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting, appoints judges to the Supreme Court, including lawyers from Roshen, judges [who ruled against Maidan protests] and relatives of [Verkhovna Rada deputy Serhiy Kivalov,” Zelenskiy said in a video clip posted to the Internet on May 10.

Other decisions also surprised Zelenskiy: “[Poroshenko] has promoted to the rank of general more than 20 officers, including those responsible for the safety of arsenals and ammunition warehouses in Balakliya, Ichnia, Kalynivka and Svatove. He also awarded SBU State Security Services head Vasyl Hrytsak the Hero of Ukraine medal.

Zelenskiy said it is pointless to say something to a person who says, “I am ready to lend my shoulder, but who keeps two figs in his pocket.”

“The situation reminds me of a tourist in an Egyptian hotel: tomorrow home, suitcases are packed, the room has already been cleaned. The normal educated person is waiting for a transfer to the airport. But not Poroshenko. He will not stop. He starts taking the towels, slippers and everything from the buffet.”

“I very much ask you: hand over the key, pay for the mini-bar and go. You still have to go through customs and passport control,” Zelenskiy said, addressing Poroshenko.
