You're reading: Zelenskiy says he dissolves parliament, yet it’s unclear if he can do it

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced the dissolution of the Verkhovna Rada on May 20.

“I dissolve the 8th Verkhovna Rada,” Zelenskiy said in his address to the people of Ukraine after he took the oath in parliament.

However, it’s not clear whether Zelenskiy has the authority to do it. The president can dissolve parliament if it was unable to form a coalition, which isn’t the case.

Before that, he asked deputies to adopt a number of urgent laws and to dismiss the head of the Ukrainian Security Service, the prosecutor general, and the defense minister within two months.
