You're reading: Zelenskiy: Government must always speak frankly with people

Ukraine’s President-elect Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on April 26, the day when Ukraine commemorates the 33rd anniversary of the accident at Chornobyl nuclear power plant, that the state should always speak frankly with its citizens and should not hide the bitter truth.

“The Chornobyl tragedy has taught us, Ukrainians, a few things. Firstly, the state should always speak frankly with people. Hiding the truth from the citizens is unacceptable – no matter how bitter it is,” he wrote on Facebook on April 26.

The second lesson, according to Zelenskiy, is that “by getting together and being united, people are able to curb and stop any trouble.”

“We have no right to forget these lessons to prevent this in future. Eternal memory to the dead. I bow my head to the heroic deeds of the [Chornobyl] cleanup workers,” Zelenskiy said.
