You're reading: Zelensky Discusses Security and Trade Call with Swedish PM

President Volodymyr Zelensky and Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson had a phone call on January 19th, 2022.

Zelensky briefed Andersson about the security situation in Ukraine and Kyiv’s attempts to secure peace using all the negotiation formats available. He also emphasized the need to unite and coordinate the political and diplomatic needs to unblock peace negotiations and renew stability in the country.

The two leaders welcomed the recent conclusion of the Treaty on Cooperation in the Security Domain between Sweden and Ukraine. The president noted that Sweden is an important security partner for Ukraine, thanking it for the assistance.

Zelensky noted, adding that it is paramount to unite efforts to stabilize the state.

The prime minister noted that Sweden’s government stands behind Ukraine and its territorial integrity.

Zelensky thanked Sweden for supporting Ukraine’s European integration and its substantial help in implementing domestic changes. The countries are prepared to deepen cooperation as part of Sweden’s reform-related cooperation strategy in Eastern Europe.

The two leaders also discussed bilateral cooperation, most prominently relating to trade, investment, and the environment. Zelensky noted that his country is interested in creating modern recycling factories, engaging Swedish companies.

“Sweden is Ukraine’s biggest trade and investment partner in the region. Despite the pandemic, our trade turnover has increased by 50% and is expected to reach $800-900 million at the end of 2022. We will continue to support this positive trend. We also welcome Sweden’s support of the national financial system,” Zelensky said.

The two leaders agreed to intensify the intergovernmental bilateral dialogue.
