Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had a phone talk with Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel on Wednesday, and they agreed to hold the Normandy format summit soon, the press service of the Office of the President has reported.

“The heads of state discussed the results of the G7 summit in Biarritz. The President of Ukraine thanked for the consistent position of Germany regarding the impossibility of Russia’s return to the G7 given its aggression against Ukraine and occupation of Crimea,” the press service said late on Aug. 28.

According to the report, Zelensky informed Merkel about the security situation in the east of Ukraine, in particular, the implementation of the agreements on the separation of forces and means in the area of Stanytsia Luhanska by the Ukrainian side.

“He also confirmed that Ukraine remains consistent in fulfilling its commitments on peaceful settlement in Donbas using political and diplomatic mechanisms,” the press service said.

Zelensky called for an urgent meeting of the leaders of the countries of the Normandy format with a view to discuss the peace process and coordinate further steps to resolve the conflict.

In turn, Merkel expressed support for Ukraine’s efforts to restore peace in Donbas and agreed with the necessity of holding a meeting at the highest level in the near future. “The parties agreed to hold a preparatory meeting of diplomatic advisors to the heads of state and government on September 2,” the Office of the President said.

During the phone talk, the parties discussed a number of issues concerning Ukrainian-German cooperation and interaction in the international arena.
