You're reading: Armenian president signs executive order to appoint Pashinyan as PM

Armenian President Armen Sarkissian signed an executive order on Aug. 2 to appoint Nikol Pashinyan as the new prime minister.

“Consistent with Part 1 Article 149 of the Armenian Constitution, to appoint Nikol Pashinyan as the prime minister,” the executive order said.

Pashinyan was nominated by the ruling parliamentary faction Civil Contract on Aug. 2.

Consistent with the constitution, the new Armenian government will be formed within 15 days since the appointment of the prime minister.

On July 17, the Armenian Constitutional Court recognized as valid the results of the early parliamentary elections held on June 20 and won by the party of acting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

On June 27, the Armenian Central Elections Commission published the final results of the early parliamentary elections, according to which Pashinyan’s party won with 53.91% of the vote. The Armenia bloc of former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan gained 21.9% of the vote, while the I Have Honor bloc formed around former Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and led by former National Security Service Director Artur Vatsenyan got 5.22%.

The political force that received the majority of parliament seats has the right to nominate its candidate to the position of the prime minister.
