WARSAW – Poland’s senators approved legislation Friday that gives the government greater control of a top court and a key judicial body despite warnings from European Union leaders that the move could put the country at risk of losing its EU voting rights.

Thousands of Poles rallied across the country Thursday against controversial court reforms by the rightwing goverment, which opposition politicians and the EU insist undermine the rule of law and separation of powers. Polish protesters sang Christmas carols in front of Warsaw's presidential palace to invite the head of state to defend the independence of the judiciary.
