Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili on March 20 vetoed a package of bills on the possibility of wiretapping private telephone conversations.
“I am returning to parliament the package of bills on so-called wiretapping with motivated remarks. There are several disputable issues in the package, in particular, the freedom of operation of the future agency. Secondly, it is the financing of the agency by communication companies,” he said at a special briefing on March 20.
The parliament passed the package of bills on March 1. Under the bills Georgia will set up an operative-technical agency that will wiretap telephone conversations and monitor Internet messages for information posing a threat to the state.
