You're reading: Georgians remember a tragic-heroic moment from 1989

On April 9 Georgians commemorated the fallen in Russia’s war against Ukraine by laying flowers at the portraits of their own martyrs for freedom in front of the Parliament Building in Tbilisi.
Today has a special meaning for Georgians – it is the anniversary of the Soviet crackdown on a peaceful Tbilisi demonstration for independence on April 9, 1989. Dozens were killed by the Soviet troops.
Today, Georgian patriots honored the memory not only of all those who have given their lives for Georgia’s freedom and independence, but also those of their countrymen who have died defending Ukraine’s liberty, including members of the Georgian legion and in the Azov battalion, and the photojournalist Max Levin.
